Tips on How to Pay a Street Parking Meter

With the goal of reducing the number of parking violations, EasyPark has developed the “Did You Know?” educational campaign. The topics for this educational series stem from research into the most common causes for parking citations. During the month of March, EasyPark’s “Did You Know” will cover options on how to pay the street parking meter to avoid meter violations in downtown Anchorage.

Street metered spaces are the most desired parking spaces in downtown Anchorage, as they are located in the core of the city. All downtown street meters take three forms of payment: Coin, credit/debit card or PaybyPhone.

If you are paying via coin, accepted forms are nickel, dime and quarter.  If you are paying via card, accepted forms are either VISA or Mastercard and a minimum time to park is one hour for 2 hr. meters and 2 hours for 10 hr. meters.

If payment is made with PaybyPhone, accepted forms of card are VISA, Mastercard, Discover, AMEX and the app also supports Apple Pay. While a $.35 service charge per transaction is applied and a minimum time to park is one hour (2hr. meters) and two hour (10 hr. meters) when using this service, the street parking rates are reduced with PaybyPhone usage to $1.25/hr. (2 hr. meters) and $.75/hr. (10 hr. meters).

To get started with PaybyPhone, download the free PaybyPhone app on your phone. Customers will then enter their license plate and credit/debit card information. This process takes up to 5 minutes to set up. Once set up, customers will then enter the parking meter’s location (2 hr is 5919 and 10 hr is 5921), desired time, and license plate.

PaybyPhone also offers amenities for using their service: Text message reminders that your time is running out, ability to add more time remotely (subject to parking time limits), receipts via email and a record of all your parking transactions. Paying with PaybyPhone also allows you to move your vehicle to another street meter location if you have remaining funds on your original transaction without having to make a new payment.
